Equipment-Specific Terms of Use for the Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope

belonging to the Imaging Center of the Department of Biology

at the Center for Functional Genomics of Microbes (C_FunGene)

of 7 January 2022

§ 1 Scope of the Terms of Use

  1. These Terms of Use govern user operations of the confocal laser scanning microscope at the Center for Functional Genomics of Microbes. The Terms of Use are set out in this appendix, which is incorporated into the General Terms of Use of the Department of Biology’s Imaging Center.
  2. The device is not available for service operations.

§ 2 Contacts

  1. The general contact is the administrative head of the Imaging Center.
  2. The scientific contacts and the persons responsible for the CLSM Leica Stellaris 8 are listed on the Imaging Center’s homepage (https://imaging.uni-greifswald.de/en/about-us/organisation/our-team/).

§ 3 Equipment

The confocal laser scanning microscope Leica Stellaris 8 provided for the Imaging Center at the C_FunGene and a detailed description of the device are available on the Imaging Center’s website (https://imaging.uni-greifswald.de).

§ 4 Admission to Equipment and Access Regulations for Users

  1. Users may not use the equipment specified under § 3 until they have filled in the questionnaire (§ 5(2) of the General Terms of Use) and until they have been given a briefing and safety briefing by a person who is in charge of the device.  The briefing is only valid for the person to whom it has been given and needs to be accompanied by a laser safety briefing, which may only be carried out by a laser safety officer. After briefing, users will be granted access to the rooms in which the equipment is kept. Usage is limited to a period of one year. After that, the user must receive a new laser safety briefing.
  2. Once the equipment briefing and general safety and laser safety briefings are complete, access to the rooms in which the equipment is situated will be activated on the user’s staff ID card or a guest ID card. On completion of the work, the guest ID card has to be returned.
  3. The equipment may only be used and access to the rooms where it is situated only granted if a briefing according to § 14 of the Biostoffverordnung - BioStoffV (Biological Agents Ordinance) and § 12 of the Gentechnik-Sicherheitsverordnung - GenTSV (Genetic Engineering Safety Ordinance) has taken place and if an occupational health check according to § 6 of the Verordnung zur arbeitsmedizinischen Vorsorge - ArbMedVV (Ordinance on Occupational Health Care) has been given. All these must be confirmed by personal signature on the questionnaire.

§ 5 Equipment Booking Procedure for Users

  1. Users can book the equipment by arranging a time with a person in charge of the device (§ 2).
  2. Bookings (agreed periods of use) must be made with a person in charge of the piece of equipment or via the device’s booking calendar and may only be made by users. If it has been agreed that a device can only be used following an electronic booking, the electronic booking is deemed a prerequisite for the use of the device.
  3. Bookings may not be made for a period of more than 48 consecutive hours.

§ 6 Usage of Equipment by Users

  1. Only authorised users may use the equipment listed in § 3.
  2. It is not permitted to carry out investigations that fall under biological protection levels 3 - 4 or involve biological materials in risk groups 3 – 4 according to § 5 of the Biostoffverordnung - BioStoffV (Biological Agents Ordinance) as well as investigations involving genetically modified organisms at protection levels 3 – 4 or biological materials in risk groups 3 – 4 according to § 7 of the Gentechnikgesetz - GenTG (Genetic Engineering Act).
  3. After use, the work area must be left clean and tidy (i.e. the lenses and the work surface must be cleaned, used material and any leftover glass must be discarded).
  4. The user must fill in and sign the logbook at the end of the usage period.
  5. After completion of the work, the user must switch off the laser and fluorescence lamps.
