Negative staining is a method to visualize small objects such as proteins, macromolecules and viruses as well as flagellates of bacteria.

For this method, specimens are bound to grids and then stained with heavy metal salts. The specimens being surrounded by the dried stain appear light in contrast to the dark background of the heavy metal in the transmission electron microscope.
